GNFS Urges Traders to Observe Fire Safety Measures Ahead of Christmas

By: Solomon Nartey Tetteh

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has urged traders and warehouse operators to adopt proper storage and safety practices to prevent fire outbreaks during the Christmas period as the festive season approaches,

Speaking on Business Breakfast on Zed 101.9FM, the Head of Public Relations of the GNFS, Divisional Officer II Desmond Ackah, cautioned that improper arrangement of goods, especially in congested warehouses and shops, could trigger spontaneous ignition without any external heat source.

“Fire engineering science tells us that not every item can be stored together. Some goods require enough ventilation between them to prevent spontaneous ignition. But in most commercial centers, especially now that we are entering the Christmas season, people have overstocked their shops and warehouses to full capacity, leaving no space for air circulation. That is a recipe for fire,” he warned.

D.O II Ackah explained that certain materials, particularly combustible and flammable ones, can generate heat internally when packed tightly without ventilation. He revealed that the GNFS is collaborating with facility and warehouse managers to address these risks before they escalate into disasters.

He also emphasized the importance of maintaining proper housekeeping within business premises, describing it as a key preventive measure.

“Good housekeeping is basically about proper arrangement and cleanliness in a space. Ensuring your facility is free from cobwebs and clutter can prevent fires from spreading rapidly. You should also make sure combustibles and flammables are not stored near heat sources that’s very important,” he stated.

The Fire Service PRO further advised traders to keep functional fire extinguishers in their shops and learn how to use them effectively.

“If every shop owner keeps a working fire extinguisher and knows how to operate it, it can go a long way to prevent small fires from becoming major disasters,” he added. He encouraged the public to adhere to basic fire safety protocols, particularly during the festive season when market activity peaks and the risk of fire incidents increases
