Ghana’s military to undergo retooling – Dep Minister
Deputy Defence Minister Brogya Genfi has revealed an ambitious plan for the retooling and modernization of the Ghana Armed Forces scheduled to begin in 2026.
The announcement was made during the 2025 Land Combat Power Demonstration held at the Bundase Training Camp. During the event, Deputy Minister Genfi expressed the government’s firm commitment to upgrading the military’s capabilities, underlining strong backing from President John Dramani Mahama. In a Facebook statement, he highlighted the President’s resolve: “I reiterated the commitment of the Commander-in-Chief, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, that the Ghana Armed Forces shall undergo a retooling and modernization drive beginning next year, the likes of which has never been witnessed in our history.”
This modernization effort aims to equip the military with state-of-the-art technology, advanced weaponry, and enhanced training programs to improve operational readiness, defense capacity, and national security. Deputy Minister Genfi emphasized that this initiative will significantly boost the Army’s effectiveness and sustainability in addressing contemporary security challenges.
In addition to launching the modernization drive, Brogya Genfi took the opportunity to underscore the core value of discipline within the Armed Forces. He reminded soldiers and officers that “discipline remains the soul of the military.
Every soldier and officer must uphold the highest standards of conduct and protect the image of our revered Armed Forces.” This call reflects the importance of maintaining professionalism and integrity as the military undergoes transformation.
The retooling and modernization plan signal a major step forward in Ghana’s defense strategy, demonstrating the government’s dedication to building a modern, well-equipped, and disciplined military force prepared to safeguard the nation’s sovereignty.
