GAF warns against wearing military apparel during protest

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has warned members of the general public, particularly those who participate in protests against the use of military patterns and accoutrements, lest they risk arrest.

In a statement issued yesterday, the military noted that despite continuous public education and warnings against the practice, the trend seems to be on the rise.

It expressed concern that the continued use of military apparel during these protests could draw the image of the GAF into disrepute.

The army also sought to draw the attention of the public to the fact that this acts is National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967, which states that “no person shall wear or use military uniforms, equipment, or accoutrements or other material unless he or she is a member of the Armed Forces of Ghana”.

They also reminded the public that apart from the legal prohibition, there are some with criminal motives who use the military uniforms to impersonate and outwit unsuspecting members of the public.

The army therefore warned that if this act persists, they will be forced to arrest persons who engage in these acts.
