Cedi@60 celebrations begin

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has launched the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Ghanaian cedi, marking six decades since the introduction of the national currency as a symbol of Ghana’s economic sovereignty and independence.

The event, held in Accra on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, begins a year-long series of activities to honour the cedi’s evolution and reinforce confidence in the local currency.

The celebrations, themed ‘Sovereignty, Stability, and Resilience’, will feature a range of national events, including exhibitions, public lectures, policy dialogues, diaspora engagements, and educational programmes designed to highlight the cedi’s history and promote financial literacy among citizens.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, underscored the significance of the milestone, describing the cedi as “a powerful emblem of Ghana’s sovereignty and an instrument of national pride.”

He said the celebrations would provide an opportunity for reflection on the currency’s achievements, challenges, and future prospects in an evolving digital economy.

According to Dr Asiama, the Bank of Ghana has curated an exhibition tracing the cedi’s transformation, from its introduction in 1965 to the redenomination in 2007, and its ongoing transition into the digital era marked by mobile money, e-payments, and financial inclusion initiatives.

“There will be activities for Ghanaians of all age groups, including educational programmes on the cedi, diaspora engagements on remittances, and a currency exhibition showcasing the journey of the cedi,”he said.

The celebration will also feature academic discussions, stakeholder engagements, and public education campaigns aimed at deepening understanding of Ghana’s monetary heritage and promoting public trust in the financial system.
