Profit-taking pushes GSE down 1.45%

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) ended the week marginally lower as investors engaged in profit-taking after several weeks of sustained gains, although financial stocks remained resilient.
Market capitalisation declined to GHS166.52 billion from GHS168.02 billion at the start of the week.
The main market barometer, the GSE Composite Index, which measures the overall performance of all listed equities, dropped from 8,490.20 points on Monday to 8,367.12 points by Friday, representing a weekly decline of 1.45 per cent.
Despite the dip, the market remains one of Africa’s strongest performers in 2025, posting a year-to-date gain of more than 71 per cent.
Trading Activity
Market trading was relatively active throughout the week, driven mainly by large-cap stocks such as MTN Ghana and the NewGold Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF).
On Monday, about 220,000 shares valued at GHS440,600 changed hands. Activity surged on Tuesday to 1.5 million shares worth GHS2.74 million, dipped slightly midweek, and rebounded on Thursday with the highest turnover of 1.6 million shares valued at GH¢4.34 million.
Friday saw trading volumes moderate to 878,402 shares, though the total value remained high at GHS4.08 million, buoyed by strong trades in MTN Ghana and NewGold ETF.
Altogether, the market recorded transactions worth GHS12.7 million for the week, underscoring continued investor interest despite mild price corrections.
Stock Performance
Several equities posted notable gains during the week. Societe Generale Ghana advanced GHS0.25 to close at GHS2.80, GCB Bank rose marginally by GHS0.01 to GHS15.64, while Clydestone Ghana gained GHS0.02 to finish at GHS0.22.
However, losses were recorded in some counters. CAL Bank declined by GHS0.05 to close at GHS0.80, Mega African Capital dropped GHS0.18 to GHS5.20, and MTN Ghana slipped by GHS0.02 to settle at GHS4.25.
The standout performer was the NewGold ETF, which soared by GHS92.17 to close at GHS459.28, reflecting strong investor appetite driven by rising global gold prices.
MTN Ghana recorded the highest trade value on Friday, contributing approximately GHS1.77 million, followed closely by NewGold ETF with GHS1.09 million.
Market Summary
By close of trading for the week ending 24 October 2025, the GSE Composite Index had declined by 1.45 per cent, while the GSE Financial Stocks Index, which tracks banks and financial institutions, edged slightly higher from 4,084.15 points to 4,098.11 points.
In essence, while overall market sentiment softened due to profit-taking, financial sector equities maintained stability, helping cushion the broader market.
