Global shipping nations meet to push landmark climate deal

Global shipping nations are meeting in London on Tuesday to negotiate a landmark climate deal that could transform the maritime industry.

The proposal seeks to introduce a global fee on greenhouse gas emissions from ships.

It would be the first of its kind.

If approved, it would compel shipping companies to abandon heavy fossil fuels in favour of cleaner energy alternatives.

 “This could be a big step in fighting climate change,” said Delaine McCullough of the Ocean Conservancy. “And it’s coming from an unexpected place, the International Maritime Organisation.”

The Net-Zero Framework would also impose strict regulations on ship fuel. Over time, the permitted level of emissions would be reduced, forcing companies to adopt greener fuels. Shipping currently accounts for around 3 per cent of global emissions, and the figure is rising.

“The goal is to make the industry switch away from fossil fuels. The fee would also help fund the production of green fuels,” said Faig Abbasov of Transport and Environment.

However, the plan faces opposition. The Trump administration has voiced strong resistance and warned of retaliatory measures if countries proceed with the agreement.

This sets the stage for a potential international clash over climate action.
