PAC recovers GH₵12.9bn in misappropriated funds

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has announced the recovery of more than GHS12.9 billion in misappropriated public funds, following intensified oversight efforts in partnership with the Auditor-General’s Department.
This development comes as the Committee continues to probe financial infractions flagged in the 2024 Auditor-General’s Report, which highlighted persistent lapses across ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).
The recoveries represent one of the most significant clawbacks of public funds in recent years.
Addressing the media in Accra, PAC Chairperson Abena Osei-Asare attributed the achievement to closer collaboration between the Committee and the Auditor-General.
She stressed that enforcing accountability and protecting the public purse remain at the heart of PAC’s mandate.
“One thing I am clear about is that what we are doing is yielding positive results. We have a report we will look at. Per the work of the Public Accounts Committee, and with the support of the Auditor-General, we have been able to retrieve GHS12.9 billion. There is a whole report on that which we will be sharing with the public at the right time,” Ms Osei-Asare said.
The recoveries cover various categories of financial irregularities, including unaccounted-for funds, wrongful payments, contract breaches and unsupported expenditures.
The Committee is expected to resume its public hearings on 27 October 2025, where officials from additional state agencies will appear to answer questions on financial management and compliance lapses.
