Seven dead, four rescued in Kasotie galamsey pit collapse

Seven illegal miners have been confirmed dead, while four others have been rescued after a pit collapse at an illegal mining site at Kasotie in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night, trapping several miners underground. Rescue efforts, led by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in collaboration with emergency services and local volunteers, are still ongoing, as more people are feared trapped.

After hours of digging through rubble, rescue teams recovered the bodies of the seven deceased miners.

Four others were pulled out alive and rushed to hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased have been sent to the morgue.

The rescue operation has been hampered by water gushing from the ground, which has slowed progress.

Assembly Member for the Kasotie Electoral Area, Samuel Ayine, confirmed the incident.

Meanwhile, recalcitrant illegal miners who have been polluting the River Mansi at Ehyireso near Prestea had their activities disrupted on Thursday morning by an eight-member team of the Bogoso Blue Water Guards.

The task force chased the miners away and set ablaze the equipment they were using for their operations.
