CSA alerts public on AI videos promoting fake investments, drugs
The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has raised the alarm over a surge in AI-generated deepfake videos falsely showing high-profile Ghanaians endorsing fake investment schemes and unapproved medical products.
In a statement released on Monday, September 29, 2025, the Authority said the manipulated videos, widely shared on social media platforms such as Facebook, feature prominent figures including the President, Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, government appointees, and media personalities.
“These videos are being used to promote fraudulent financial platforms promising unrealistic returns or advertise dangerous and unapproved drugs, including weight-loss and diabetes products. The goal is to defraud unsuspecting members of the public,” the CSA explained.
The Authority warned that cybercriminals use sophisticated AI tools to create convincing imitations of voices and images, making it difficult to distinguish between real and fake content.
Key signs of deepfakes include mismatched lip movements, robotic voice tones, unnatural eye movement or blinking, and inconsistencies in lighting or backgrounds.
The CSA has urged Ghanaians to verify any promotional video featuring national leaders or well-known figures through official government channels or trusted media outlets before taking any action.
It also advised the public to never send money or share personal details in response to unverified ads or messages and to check with relevant regulators such as the Bank of Ghana or the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) before making financial or health-related decisions.
The Authority added that it is working with social media companies, law enforcement agencies, and other government bodies to identify and remove these videos while holding perpetrators accountable.
