ECG Accra East Region sensitises public on new cashless credit system

By Selorm GBORBIDZI, Accra

Officials and staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Accra East Region on Friday went on a float and education campaign as part of activities to mark the 2023 Customer Service Week.

The float in Accra started from regional office in Makola  and went through  opposite the Kinbu Senior High School, through the Tema Station, past the National Theatre, the  Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel and, on towards Tudu and the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) Head Office, on to the Graphic Road.

The float allowed the officials to interact with members of the general public and educate them on the new digitisation drive the power distributor is embarking on.

Led by an open deck bus with a huge banner captioned ‘ECG Goes Cashless,’ they distributed fliers and pamphlets to market women, drivers, motor cyclists, and pedestrians, and educated them on how they could access the ECG’s credit purchasing service from the comfort of their homes, through the power of their mobile phones and their mobile money accounts.

They also took time to have individual conversations with people who were visibly unhappy to see the officials going by, and could be heard complaining about one issue or the other.

The Acting General Manager of Accra East Region, Ing Jonathan Agyabeng,  in a statement delivered on behalf of ECG Managing director Mr. Samuel Mahama Dubik described the float as “an opportunity to further publicise our digital transformational agenda to our cherished customers.”

He noted that the company has in recent months undertaken significant digital initiatives, including the enhanced Power App and the Cashless system, which are major changes that have positively impacted both the internal and external customers of the company.

He indicated that revenue mobilization will be the new norm for the company, “since it is our lifeblood.”

He advised all ECG staff to eschew any act which will negate the company’s corporate values including professionalism, openness, wellbeing, excellence and reliability.

The Public Relations Officer of ECG Accra East Region, Mary Eshun-Oppong, told The Finder in an interview that, the exercise was meant to create awareness about the new cashless system that the ECG was rolling out, and their new mobile application, PowerApp, which they could download unto their smartphones from the app store (for Apple) or play store (for Android).

She explained that for customers without smartphones, they could access the service through the short code *226# on their feature phones (yam phones ).

She explained however that this new system only works with the ECG’s smart Prepaid Metres, which it is currently rolling out.

Eshun-Oppong assured customers on the non-smart metres that the ECG would eventually phase out the old metres, and will replace those with the new smart metres.

She assured that the new system works with all mobile networks and comes without any charge, whether regular transaction charges or the E-levy.
