GSE breaks 8000 as financial, energy stocks rally

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) closed Thursday’s trading on a strong note, with the GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) climbing 217.6 points to 8,046.69, breaching the closely watched 8,000 threshold.

The surge was powered by solid gains in financial, energy and consumer stocks, underscoring investor confidence despite lighter trading volumes.

The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) also advanced, adding 43.49 points to 3,738.36. Year-to-date, the GSE-CI has gained an impressive 64.6 per cent, while the financial index is up 57.02 per cent, reflecting sustained bullish sentiment across Ghana’s equities market.

Trading volume moderated compared with earlier sessions: 416,360 shares worth GHS1.51 million exchanged hands, down from Wednesday’s 745,940 shares valued at GHS9.31 million. Tuesday had recorded the week’s highest volume at nearly 5 million shares.

Despite the lower turnover, market capitalisation jumped to GHS160.74 billion, signalling that investors were willing to pay higher prices for the shares that did trade.
