ASEC hails PURC for ‘fair’ 1.14% electricity tariff hike
The Africa Sustainable Energy Centre (ASEC) has commended the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) for what it described as a fair and balanced electricity tariff adjustment for the current quarter.
In a statement, ASEC noted that the Commission had demonstrated its commitment to protecting consumers by approving only a 1.14 per cent increase, compared to the 225 per cent initially proposed.
According to ASEC, the decision puts customers first and reflects a thoughtful approach to shielding the public from excessive utility costs.
The organisation, however, stressed that tariff reviews must always follow due process and cautioned that consumers should not be made to absorb the inefficiencies of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
“Under no circumstances should the inefficiencies of the Electricity Company of Ghana be shifted onto consumers,” the statement emphasised.
ASEC further urged that any future tariff adjustments linked to ECG be tied to strict performance benchmarks, particularly in reducing both technical and commercial losses.
It also called on ECG to adopt modern and effective revenue mobilisation strategies to strengthen the financial health of the electricity sector in the long term.
ASEC added that such reforms would help ensure stability in the sector without unnecessarily burdening citizens.
The Centre also encouraged PURC to remain firm against external pressures that could result in unjustifiable tariff increases and place further strain on Ghanaians.
