Tema–Mpakadan Trains Back on Track October 1

Passenger train services on the Tema–Mpakadan railway line will officially resume operations on 1 October 2025, promising a major boost to socio-economic activities along the corridor and surrounding communities.
Announcing the development at a media briefing in Accra on Wednesday, 24 September, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA), Dr Frederick Appoh, said all challenges that had stalled operations, including infrastructure defects and land encroachment, have been fully resolved.
“The trains are ready and capable of running the lines. At the moment, we’re going to run the trains on 1 October,” Dr Appoh stated.
He explained that the GRDA is working closely with Ayalolo buses, GPRTU vehicles and ride-hailing services such as Uber to ensure passengers can conveniently continue their journeys beyond the railway stations.
“Every station will have two Ayalolo buses and two GPRTU vehicles on standby, in addition to Uber services, to give passengers a second degree of freedom to reach their final destinations,” he said.
Dr Appoh also highlighted plans to make the stations vibrant economic hubs.
“We are going to provide a door-to-door service on the line. We are also going to operate a micro-economic corridor, where people can request leases to sell food products, open smaller shops within our stations, as well as mobile money vending outlets. We’re encouraging the public to partake in this,” he added.
The resumption of the Tema–Mpakadan train service is expected to ease road traffic, cut travel times and stimulate trade and commerce between Tema, a major port and industrial city, and the growing communities along the 97-kilometre route to Mpakadan in the Eastern Region.
