Cement imports from Togo threaten local industry — COCMAG

The Chamber of Cement Manufacturers, Ghana (COCMAG), has called on the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry to take urgent steps to curb the growing influx of Cimco cement from Togo.

The Chamber says the surge in imports, particularly over the past two months, has been concentrated in the Volta Region and Ada, with signs that the trend is gradually extending toward Accra.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of COCMAG, Dr George Dawson-Ahmoah, speaking to the media, cautioned that unchecked imports pose a serious threat to the competitiveness and survival of Ghana’s cement industry.

“The greater proportion of this influx enters through Aflao, moving down to Ada and Tema, and gradually trickling into other parts of the country. What starts small quickly spreads widely. We have evidence that these products are being packaged and branded as Cimco cement,” he said.

Dr Dawson-Ahmoah revealed that the Chamber has already raised the matter with the Minister responsible and has been assured that action is underway.

He stressed that COCMAG will continue to follow up to ensure the issue is addressed.

The Chamber warned that failure to act decisively could lead to significant job losses, reduced local production and a slowdown in industrial growth, which would undermine the government’s broader industrialisation agenda.
