GSE gains in August as Cocoa Processing Company soars 50%

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) continued its impressive performance in August 2025, as ten equities recorded price gains, helping the market sustain a strong rally despite mixed sector movements.

Leading the gainers’ chart was Cocoa Processing Company PLC, which soared by 50.00 per cent during the month.

Other notable performers included Intravenous Infusions PLC (25.00 per cent), Trust Bank Gambia PLC (10.00 per cent), Clydestone (Ghana) PLC (10.00 per cent), Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana) (9.01 per cent), NewGold ETF (8.16 per cent), Ghana Oil Company PLC (GOIL) (7.94 per cent), GCB Bank PLC (5.15 per cent), Republic Bank (Ghana) PLC (4.76 per cent), and Ecobank Ghana PLC (2.73 per cent).

The positive momentum lifted the GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) by 4.84 per cent, closing August at 7,330.37 points and extending its year-to-date return to an impressive 49.95 per cent.

However, the GSE Financial Stock Index (GSE-FSI) slipped by 0.44 per cent to 3,411.96 points, even as it maintained a strong 43.31 per cent year-to-date gain, reflecting investor caution toward selected banking and financial counters.

The month was not without laggards. Ecobank Transnational Inc. fell by 6.10 per cent, while Cal Bank PLC dropped by 5.56 per cent. Unilever Ghana PLC and Access Bank Ghana PLC also eased by 0.44 per cent and 0.12 per cent, respectively. Despite these pullbacks, overall market breadth remained positive, with gainers far outpacing losers.

Activity in the fixed-income segment was equally notable. The Ghana Fixed Income Market (GFIM) recorded a total trade volume of 23.92 billion securities in August, an 11.67 per cent increase from July’s 21.42 billion.

Treasury bills accounted for 46.25 per cent of trades, government notes and bonds made up 37.44 per cent, Bank of Ghana bills represented 12.61 per cent, and corporate bonds contributed 3.70 per cent.

Equity turnover slowed sharply, with 45.90 million shares valued at GH¢203.63 million changing hands.

This marked an 87.19 per cent decline in volume and an 88.23 per cent decline in value compared to July.

Yet, relative to August 2024, trading activity surged by 105.54 per cent in volume and 15.76 per cent in value, underscoring the market’s longer-term growth trajectory.

Analysts note that August’s gains reinforce the GSE’s position as one of Africa’s best-performing equity markets in 2025, with investor interest supported by resilient corporate earnings and steady macroeconomic improvements.
