Otto Addo explains ‘defensive’ tactics after Mali win

Black Stars coach Otto Addo has explained his tactics against Mali in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Monday evening in Accra.

Ghana secured a 1-0 victory, courtesy of a second-half strike from defender Alexander Djiku.

The Black Stars were far from convincing but ensured they collected all three points to boost their chances of qualifying for the tournament in North America.

After the match, the German-born coach was asked about his approach to the game, which he said was based on a defensive strategy.

“This is football, sometimes you have to adjust your tactics. I knew they (Mali) needed to win, so we played a bit more defensively. We had good headers in our team because we have three tall defenders, and in the end, that was his opinion and I understand,” he said.

“I had my tactics, we had our tactics, and we decided well. What is most important are the three points,” the Black Stars manager added.

The Black Stars are just one win away from reaching the USA, Canada, and Mexico for the 2026 World Cup.

Ghana will travel to face the Central African Republic in the penultimate match of the qualifiers before hosting Comoros in Accra in October.
