Over USD77m Ofankor–Nsawam road debt cleared

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced that government has fully settled all outstanding debts owed to the contractor working on the Ofankor–Nsawam road project, clearing a major financial bottleneck that had stalled progress in recent years.
Speaking in a media interview on Thursday, 4 September 2025, after accompanying President John Dramani Mahama on an inspection tour of the project site, Mr Agbodza disclosed that the government has paid over USD77 million, settling every certificate raised and leaving no arrears.
“In excess of USD77 million has been paid. As of today, we don’t owe the contractor a penny. Every certificate raised which was outstanding before we came to power and led to the abandonment of the site has been paid fully,” the minister explained.
The minister expressed optimism that with the financial hurdle out of the way, work on the strategic highway linking Accra to the eastern corridor would now move at a faster pace.
He said government remains committed to ensuring that the project, which is critical for easing traffic congestion and boosting trade, is completed on schedule.
During the inspection, President Mahama urged the contractor to redouble efforts and deliver the project within the stipulated timeline.
He stressed that government would not tolerate unnecessary delays given the importance of the road to commuters and businesses alike.
The Ofankor–Nsawam stretch, a vital segment of the Accra–Kumasi highway, has been a source of frustration for motorists due to persistent congestion and deteriorating road conditions.
