EOCO recovers over 100 stolen cars, warns buyers to be cautious

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has retrieved more than 100 stolen vehicles connected to illicit car trade in Ghana since 2022.

Head of Legal and Prosecution at EOCO, Leo Anthony Siamah, disclosed this in a media interview, stressing that the development indicates the country is grappling with a bigger problem than initially assumed.

Mr Siamah revealed that a significant majority of the vehicles EOCO recovers in such operations turn out to be stolen.

He indicated that many of these cars were not included in the initial list of 300 flagged vehicles, yet investigations have since led to the retrieval of more than 100 vehicles.

“Since 2022, we have recovered well over 100 vehicles, many of which were not even part of the original 300 flagged list,” Mr Siamah stated.

He explained that the discovery came as a shock to the agency because the new cases went beyond the vehicles initially flagged.

“Almost immediately, we came to the realisation that we have a bigger problem than we were dealing with,” he remarked.

EOCO has since intensified its operations, targeting criminal syndicates that facilitate the stolen car trade.

Mr Siamah urged the public to be cautious when purchasing vehicles.

“We advise buyers to always conduct proper due diligence before making any payment,” he advised.
