Youth advocate calls for climate action to achieve SDGs

Youth Leader and SDG Advocate Nii Noi Kofi Omaboe has underscored the critical role of climate action in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), warning that neglecting environmental sustainability could undermine progress across all sectors.

In Ghana, local governance structures such as district assemblies play a vital role in implementing SDG-related projects, yet access to information and youth participation remain limited.

Speaking on the Business Breakfast Show on Zed 101.9FM, Mr Omaboe said that although some may feel climate and sustainability issues have received disproportionate attention, the reality is that a safe and habitable planet underpins the success of all development efforts.

“If we achieve all the SDGs but fail to secure a safe planet where we can live, breathe and enjoy the things we have worked for, then it would all be in vain,” he said.

Mr Omaboe noted that the synergies between climate action and other SDGs have not been fully developed, limiting public understanding of their interconnections.

The Youth Advocate called for greater openness and decentralisation of information within local government structures to enable more young people to engage in decision-making processes.

“We often do not know what is going on at the local government level. There should be easier access to information because that is one of the simplest ways to get involved,” he explained.

Mr Omaboe encouraged the youth in Ghana to find entry points into local governance to advance sustainable development.

“That is where we work at the grassroots to drive local action,” he stated.

This year’s International Youth Day, marked under the theme “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond,” has amplified calls for stronger youth involvement in climate action and governance as part of the global effort to meet the 2030 targets.
