Melcom monitoring cedi stability, ready to adjust prices

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

Retail giant Melcom Ghana has reaffirmed its strong commitment to strategic media engagement and hinted at an adjusted pricing approach in response to Ghana’s current macroeconomic stability, particularly the strengthening of the cedi.

This came to light during the company’s 2025 Annual Media Soirée held in Accra on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The event, which has become a key fixture on Melcom’s corporate calendar, brought together journalists from across the media spectrum, print, broadcast, and digital for an evening of interaction, appreciation, and forward-looking dialogue.

Speaking to ZED News on the sidelines of the event, Group Communications Manager of Melcom Ghana, Francis Sam, said the media soirée is organized annually to foster stronger ties with the media and thank them for their continuous support in telling Melcom’s story.

“It’s our way of showing appreciation to the media for the incredible work they do. The media has always played a crucial role in shaping public perception of brands, and for a company like Melcom, whose operations span retail, distribution, and logistics, the media is an indispensable partner,” Mr. Sam stated.

He emphasized that beyond media appreciation, the event also provides an avenue for the company to share updates on its evolving business strategy, particularly as it relates to pricing, supply chain, and product innovation.

Reflecting on the current economic climate, Mr. Sam said the company is encouraged by the cedi’s relative stability in recent months.

This, he explained, has created a more predictable import environment and could potentially translate into improved price offerings for consumers in the near term.

“We are closely monitoring the performance of the cedi. It has held steady for several weeks, and if this trend continues, consumers can expect more competitive pricing and better value for money across our outlets,” Mr. Sam noted.

The Melcom Group has consistently positioned itself as a leader in Ghana’s retail space, with a footprint in most of the regions and a wide range of consumer goods, from electronics and groceries to clothing and household items.

Mr. Sam noted that while the group continues to invest in digital transformation, it remains equally committed to the physical shopping experience, recognizing that many Ghanaians still prefer in-store purchases.

“We are committed to giving our customers a seamless blend of online and in-store shopping. Whether it’s pricing, convenience, or product range, our goal is to stay responsive to consumer needs,” he added. The soirée ended with informal networking among Melcom executives and media professionals, strengthening ties between the corporate and journalism communities as the company looks ahead to the next phase of its growth.
