The Black Queens of Ghana will face Algeria in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a thumping victory over Tanzania.
Ghana, returning to the tournament after missing the last two editions, secured a 4-1 win against the Taifa Stars to reach the quarterfinals.
The Black Queens advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after beating Tanzania in their final group game on Monday evening.
Princella Adubea gave Ghana an early lead after a quick start by the West Africans, but the Taifa Stars leveled through Stumai Abdallah. Alice Kusi converted from the spot before Evelyn Badu and Chantelle Hlorkah sealed the win late in the game.
The Black Queens entered the game knowing only a win would keep them in the competition and wasted no time establishing their intentions with early pressure on their opponents.
The early push paid off after the Tanzania goalkeeper’s clearance met Adubea as Ghana broke the deadlock in the 12th minute.
However, the Black Queens stuttered late in the first half after a free kick from Tanzania was poorly cleared, leading to Abdallah firing home the equalizer.
After the break, the Black Queens regained control of the match with Princess Marfo troubling the Tanzanian defense. The Bay FC forward was fouled in the box halfway into the second half, with Kusi netting from the spot.
Second-half substitute Evelyn Badu extended Ghana’s advantage after a Stella Nyamekye free kick fell to the ex-Hasaacas Ladies star.
Things went from good to better for the Black Queens with Chantelle Boye Hlorkah curling home in the final minute.
They will now face Algeria on Saturday, July 18, 2025.
