KNUST student sentenced to 10 years for robbing hairdresser

A Level 200 student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Akropong Circuit Court for robbery.
Fatawu Amponsah, 25, who also works as a driver’s mate, was convicted on his own plea after admitting to robbing a hairdresser of her mobile phone at knife threat.
The court, presided over by Mrs. Gloria Mensah Bonsu, handed down the sentence after hearing details of the assault.
According to Police Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu, the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on June 16.
The victim, Juliet Nyarko, a hairdresser apprentice at Abuakwa Asenemaso, was walking home from town when Amponsah followed her.
He demanded her iPhone 11, worth GHS3,000, and when she refused, pulled out a kitchen knife. He beat her severely until she was weak, pushed her to the ground, and fled with the phone.
Her screams drew the attention of residents, who chased the suspect, arrested him, and handed him over to the Abuakwa police.
In his caution statement, the student admitted to the robbery.
He was charged after further investigations and arraigned before the court.
The incident has sparked public concern over safety and student involvement in violent crimes.
