A dietitian at Hale and Hearty Nutrition, Emelia Bamfo Boatemaa, is urging parents to embrace colorful, fun, and engaging strategies to encourage healthy eating habits in children.
According to the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS), while there has been progress in reducing stunting and malnutrition among children under five, poor dietary habits and low consumption of fruits and vegetables continue to hinder children’s growth, immunity, and development.

Speaking on Zed Wellness Link, Ms. Boatemaa emphasized the importance of variety and involvement in children’s diets to support strong immunity and overall well-being.
“Parents should think of the rainbow when planning meals. Incorporating foods with different colors like red, orange, yellow, and green, not only makes meals visually appealing but also ensures that children get a mix of nutrients from different food groups,” she said.
Ms. Boatemaa explained that using a rainbow of foods naturally promotes the inclusion of carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, and healthy proteins, creating a more balanced and nutritious diet.
She emphasized that children are naturally drawn to bright, playful presentations, and parents can use that to their advantage.
“For instance, you can offer probiotic yogurt as a healthier alternative and add colorful fruits like green grapes, bananas, and tangerines. Freezing this mixture into Popsicle forms makes it fun and attractive for kids, while still providing essential vitamins and minerals to boost their immunity,” the dietitian suggested.
Ms. Boatemaa also encouraged parents to invite their kids into the kitchen, especially when preparing simple meals like fruit salads.
“When children help wash or arrange fruits, they feel involved and excited. This sense of participation often motivates them to eat what they’ve helped prepare,” she added.
