Ghana’s economy hits 5.3% growth in Q1

Ghana’s economy grew by 5.3 percent in the first quarter of 2025, reflecting ongoing recovery and strength in key sectors—especially agriculture and services.

The figure, released by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), marks an improvement over the 4.9 percent growth recorded during the same period last year. Growth was even stronger in the non-oil segment of the economy, which expanded by 6.8 percent, indicating broad-based growth beyond the traditional oil and gas sector.

According to Government Statistician Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, the performance was largely driven by strong activity in the crops sub-sector of agriculture, which led to an overall sector growth of 6.6 percent. This was followed closely by a 5.9 percent increase in the services sector, supported by Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Finance and Insurance, Transport and Storage, and Health and Social Work.

“These numbers reflect strong activity across many areas of the economy. All sectors recorded growth except the industrial sector, which was affected by the contraction in oil and gas,” Dr. Iddrisu said during a media briefing in Accra.

The industrial sector, which includes manufacturing, mining, construction, and utilities—posted slower growth of 3.4 percent. The downturn in oil and gas activity was the main drag on the sector’s performance during the quarter.

Despite the challenges in industry, analysts say the strong performance in agriculture and services offers a positive outlook for jobs and income generation, especially for youth and small businesses. A stronger ICT sector, in particular, is expected to create more digital and tech-based job opportunities, while growth in agriculture could translate into improved market conditions for farmers and agribusinesses.

The government has pledged to implement further policy measures to stimulate industrial output and maintain momentum in the economy’s productive sectors.
