Mahama woos African allies for top AU post

President John Dramani Mahama has intensified Ghana’s diplomatic outreach for its African Union (AU) Chairmanship bid, formally requesting support from Burundi and Tunisia during credential ceremonies at Jubilee House on Tuesday.
Receiving letters of credence from newly appointed ambassadors of Tunisia, Burundi, Greece, Vietnam, and Jamaica, President Mahama emphasized Ghana’s commitment to continental unity.
“As we pursue the AU Chairmanship, we’re building strong coalitions with sister nations like Tunisia and Burundi. Their support is crucial to advancing Africa’s shared interests,” he stated.
The President framed Ghana’s bid as a platform to drive Pan-African unity, Sustainable development, Peace and regional integration
President Mahama also outlined broader cooperation priorities with all five nations, highlighting trade, investment, education, and peacebuilding as key partnership areas.
The ambassadors pledged to strengthen bilateral ties, with Tunisia’s envoy specifically endorsing Ghana’s AU leadership aspirations.
The ceremony formally initiates the diplomats’ missions in Ghana, with President Mahama assuring them of his government’s full support.
