New Mpox infections push Ghana’s total to 79
Ghana has confirmed 34 new cases of Mpox, bringing the total number of infections to 79 as of Friday, June 6, 2025, according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
Four patients are currently hospitalized, though no deaths have been recorded. Health authorities have ramped up surveillance and contact tracing to curb further spread.
The GHS is urging the public to practice strict hand hygiene, avoid physical contact with symptomatic individuals, and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms develop. Common signs of infection include high fever, severe headache, muscle pain, backache, swollen lymph nodes, and progressive skin rashes that often start on the face.
Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the GHS, stated that improved detection methods are helping identify cases faster, enabling quicker isolation and containment. All regional hospitals are equipped with isolation units to manage potential cases.
Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, spreads through close contact with infected individuals or contaminated materials. While most patients recover within weeks, those with weakened immune systems may face severe complications. The GHS advises symptomatic persons to isolate immediately, contact health officials, avoid self-medication, and wear face masks when seeking care. Health officials continue to monitor close contacts of confirmed cases as part of efforts to control the outbreak.
