It makes sense — Kwaw Kese backs ¢1 fuel levy
Ghanaian Hiplife artist Kwaw Kese has expressed his support for the newly introduced GHS1 fuel levy, part of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, passed by Parliament on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.
In a video posted to his official Instagram page on June 9, 2025, the rapper stated that he sees the new levy as a reasonable measure, especially when compared to previous policies such as the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy).
Kwaw Kese pointed out that the recent reduction in fuel prices from GHS16 to GHS12 per liter by the government has brought relief to consumers. According to him, contributing GHS1 from the GHS4 saved on each liter of fuel is a fair trade-off to help the country address its energy challenges.
“The price of fuel has been reduced from GHS16 to GHS12 per liter, which means the President has dashed Ghanaians GHS4. And if he is now saying, ‘Give GHS1 out of the GHS4,’ I think it makes sense,” Kwaw Kese said in the video.
He also called on Ghanaians to move beyond political divisions and focus on the broader goal of national development.
“I know some people will make politics out of this. But I think it makes sense if we want to build a great nation. I would advise us to put the politics aside and work toward how we can develop the country,” he added. The GHS1 fuel levy is part of the government’s broader efforts to address Ghana’s longstanding energy sector debt and ensure a stable power supply. The levy will be applied per liter of petroleum products sold, with revenue directed toward improving financial sustainability in the energy sector.
