UNDP crucial to Ghana’s fiscal, development goals — Deputy Finance Minister
The Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, has commended the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as a critical partner in Ghana’s pursuit of fiscal stability, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
He made this known during a courtesy call by UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Niloy Banerjee, and his delegation at the Ministry of Finance in Accra.
Mr. Ampem highlighted the strong alignment between the UNDP’s programmes and the Government of Ghana’s 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, particularly in areas of sustainable finance, green transition, and inclusive growth. He emphasized that the collaboration is especially vital as Ghana works to consolidate its post-COVID-19 recovery and implement its medium-term development strategies.
“We recognize UNDP as a thought leader and strategic partner and acknowledge the value of the organization’s support in bridging financial gaps and advancing economic development,” the Deputy Minister stated.
$60 Million Investment Praised
Mr. Ampem also lauded the UNDP for disbursing over $60 million in development support over the past five years. These funds, he noted, have gone into diverse areas including governance, youth employment, digital innovation, and climate action.
He specifically acknowledged the UNDP’s role in Ghana’s Integrated National Financing Framework (INFF), the development of a climate finance strategy, and the SDG Investor Map, which identifies investment opportunities in key sectors such as agriculture and infrastructure.
“UNDP has been instrumental in supporting a broad range of development initiatives. We appreciate the consistent commitment and leadership demonstrated by UNDP in helping Ghana realize its national aspirations,” he said.
The Deputy Minister added that additional support in strengthening Ghana’s revenue mobilization efforts would be timely and highly appreciated.
UNDP Reaffirms Commitment
UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Niloy Banerjee, reiterated the agency’s dedication to supporting Ghana’s development ambitions. He commended the government’s ongoing economic reforms and reaffirmed UNDP’s interest in expanding and deepening its partnerships with Ghana.
“We are committed to Ghana’s development agenda and are ready to support not only in areas of climate finance and inclusive growth but also in debt restructuring and sustainable governance,” Mr. Banerjee said.
He also emphasized that ongoing support will continue under the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2023–2025, which focuses on governance, climate resilience, and inclusive economic transformation.
The meeting reaffirmed the strong partnership between Ghana and the UNDP, as both parties look to deepen collaboration in key sectors to drive long-term growth and development.
