U.S. Embassy bids farewell to Ambassador Virginia Palmer

The United States Embassy in Ghana has officially bid farewell to Her Excellency Virginia Evelyn Palmer, marking the end of her distinguished three-year tenure as U.S. Ambassador to Ghana.

Ambassador Palmer concluded her tour on May 28, 2025, as announced in a heartfelt statement shared on the Embassy’s official Facebook page.

A seasoned diplomat with an impressive 39-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service, Ambassador Palmer’s tenure in Ghana from 2022 to 2025 has been hailed as a period of deepened bilateral engagement and fruitful collaboration between the United States and Ghana. The Embassy lauded her service as “outstanding,” highlighting her strong focus on mutual priorities including public health, regional security, economic growth, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

“Ambassador Palmer’s leadership and diplomatic acumen have left an indelible mark on U.S.-Ghana relations. Her unwavering commitment to fostering trust, cooperation, and shared values has significantly strengthened the partnership between our two nations,” the Embassy’s statement said.

During her tenure, Ambassador Palmer oversaw a wide range of initiatives aimed at enhancing Ghana’s development and reinforcing U.S. support in critical sectors. Notably, she played a pivotal role in implementing health programs that bolstered Ghana’s response to COVID-19 and other public health challenges. Under her stewardship, the U.S. also expanded security cooperation with Ghana, contributing to regional peace and counterterrorism efforts across West Africa.

In economic development, Palmer championed U.S. investments in Ghana’s private sector, supported youth entrepreneurship, and encouraged sustainable trade initiatives under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). Her advocacy for democratic governance was equally impactful, supporting free and fair elections, civil society empowerment, and the rule of law as key elements of her diplomatic agenda.

Her departure was met with expressions of gratitude from Ghanaian government officials, civil society organizations, and members of the diplomatic community. Many praised her collaborative spirit, cultural sensitivity, and deep understanding of Ghana’s aspirations on the global stage.

With Ambassador Palmer’s departure, Deputy Chief of Mission Rolf Olson has assumed responsibilities as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim. Olson will lead the Embassy’s operations until a new ambassador is nominated and confirmed.
