Empathy key to managing layoffs – HR Specialist

Employment and labour expert Ms. Nana Madina Ibrahim has urged employers to approach layoffs with empathy, transparency, and a strong commitment to due process, warning that how retrenchments are handled can have lasting impacts on both employees and organizations.
Speaking on Business Breakfast on Zed FM, Ms. Ibrahim emphasized that layoffs should never be treated as routine administrative tasks but as decisions with serious personal, social, and economic implications.
“Employers must communicate clearly and compassionately with affected staff. It helps reduce the emotional and psychological burden of job loss,” she advised.
She also cautioned that layoffs affect not just those who lose their jobs, but also those who remain—often called “survivors.” These employees, she explained, can suffer from low morale, stress, and reduced trust in management, which in turn can lead to decreased productivity and workplace instability.
Ms. Ibrahim stressed that all layoffs must be conducted ethically and in line with Ghana’s labour laws, ensuring timely notification and respectful treatment throughout the process.
“There is both a legal and moral obligation to handle downsizing responsibly,” she said.
She further called for fair severance packages, counselling, and career transition support to help affected employees navigate the difficult period.
As businesses face increasing economic pressure, Ms. Ibrahim said responsible leadership and open communication are key to preserving employee trust and organizational integrity.
