Clear Communication Vital in Layoffs – HR Expert

Legal and Human Resource expert, Ms. Naa Amerley Croffie, has emphasized that transparent and continuous communication is crucial when managing layoffs, warning that poor handling can damage employee morale and a company’s long-term reputation.
Speaking on Zed FM’s Business Breakfast Show on Monday, May 26, 2025, Ms. Croffie explained that how an organization communicates during layoffs can ease “survivor guilt” among remaining staff—who often experience anxiety and fear of being the next to go.
“Clear, honest, and ongoing communication with staff helps reduce uncertainty and emotional distress,” she said, urging businesses to prioritize empathy and fairness in the layoff process.
Citing research, Ms. Croffie noted that over 80% of laid-off workers experience depression or financial hardship, while remaining employees often suffer low morale, stress, and distrust in management, all of which harm productivity and workplace culture.
She recommended employee counseling and wellness programs for both affected and retained workers, adding that layoffs should be conducted with due process and legal compliance.
“The way layoffs are handled sends a strong signal to both current and future talent. If it’s done poorly, it can seriously affect how people view your company,” Ms. Croffie warned.
She concluded by advising employers to anchor layoff decisions in strategic communication, legal diligence, and human compassion to protect their brand and workforce during difficult times.
