Empress Gifty demands ₵20m from Agradaa in defamation suit
Renowned Ghanaian gospel musician Empress Gifty Adorye has initiated legal proceedings against self-styled evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, seeking GH₵20 million in damages over alleged defamatory remarks made against her.
The lawsuit, filed at the Tema High Court on Tuesday, 20 May 2025, is being handled by the law firm Osei Aidoh Akpokavie and Co., acting on behalf of the gospel singer. The suit claims that Nana Agradaa made a series of slanderous and libelous statements intended to tarnish Empress Gifty’s reputation and public image.
According to legal documents made public by her husband, politician Hopeson Adorye, Empress Gifty is seeking GH₵20 million in general damages for both slander and libel. In addition to the monetary compensation, the plaintiff is asking the court to issue an order compelling Nana Agradaa to retract all defamatory statements and permanently remove related content from all media platforms under her control.
Though the full details of the specific defamatory claims are yet to be disclosed, sources close to the singer suggest the suit stems from repeated public attacks and alleged false accusations made by Nana Agradaa via social media and online platforms.
Empress Gifty, a multi-award-winning gospel artist known for her powerful vocals and influence in Ghana’s music and faith circles, has largely maintained a calm public posture in the face of earlier criticisms. However, the current legal action signals a firmer stance against what she describes as calculated character assassination.
Legal analysts note that, if successful, this case could set a significant precedent regarding the limits of free speech and accountability for public commentary, especially on social media, where personalities often clash.
Nana Agradaa, a former fetish priestess turned evangelist, has remained a polarizing figure in Ghana’s religious and digital space, frequently drawing both praise and criticism for her outspoken and controversial remarks.
