UTAG-UG calls for Auditor-General’s resignation over GH¢59.2m Audit Report

The University of Ghana chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UG) has called for the resignation of the Auditor-General, Mr. Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, following the release of an audit report accusing the University of overstating staff compensation by GH¢59.2 million between 2022 and 2024.
In a statement, UTAG-UG described the Auditor-General’s findings as inaccurate, misleading, and damaging, insisting that the report does not reflect the actual financial records of the University of Ghana.
According to the group, the report, which was presented to Parliament and made public earlier this month, claims that the University inflated compensation figures submitted to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), resulting in the alleged overstatement. UTAG-UG, however, refutes these claims and accuses the Auditor-General of failing to engage with the University’s management and finance office before publishing the report.
“The audit report has caused significant reputational damage to the University of Ghana and created public mistrust based on flawed analysis,” the group said.
“We therefore demand the immediate resignation of the Auditor-General, Mr. Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, for professional negligence and failure to adhere to due diligence.”
The association argues that such a high-profile error undermines public confidence in the auditing process and could affect funding, partnerships, and the overall image of the University.
UTAG-UG has also called on the Auditor-General’s office to retract the report and issue a public apology to the University of Ghana community. They further urged Parliament and the Ghana Audit Service Board to investigate the circumstances surrounding the report’s preparation and publication. The Auditor-General’s office has not yet commented publicly on the call for resignation.
