Ghana Meteorological Agency warns of heavier rains ahead

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) is urging the public to brace for increasingly intense and frequent rainfall as the country enters the peak of the major rainy season.
This follows recent torrential downpours that caused severe flooding in several parts of the Greater Accra Region, including Pantang, Nsawam, Lakeside, and Kasoa. On Monday, the Municipal Chief Executive of the Adentan Municipal Assembly, Ella Esiman Nongo, confirmed that three people lost their lives in flooding after nearly three hours of continuous rainfall on Sunday, May 18, 2025. The storm, which began around 3:00 p.m., submerged multiple communities across the capital, affecting areas such as Weija, Kaneshie, Adabraka, Adenta-Dodowa, and Tema.
In response to the growing threat, the Head of the Central Analysis and Forecast Office at GMet, Felicity Ahafianyo, stressed the urgent need for public vigilance and preparedness.
“When we issued the seasonal forecast, we indicated that rainfall intensity could be higher, and the frequency was also expected to increase. We’re already seeing this, as witnessed yesterday along the coast,” she said.
She noted that similar rainfall patterns are occurring in other parts of the country. “On Friday, we had a comparable event in the Volta Region, where it rained for more than an hour. This is likely to continue until the major rainy season ends in the southern sector,” she added.
Ms. Ahafianyo advised residents in flood-prone or low-lying areas to take early precautions, including temporary relocation if necessary. She emphasized that the season is now in full swing, and both the intensity and frequency of rainfall are expected to rise. She also called on the media to support GMet’s efforts by regularly sharing weather updates and alerts. According to her, timely dissemination of information is essential to help the public stay safe and prepared during this critical period.
