Heavy rains test Accra’s flood preparedness again
A heavy downpour on Sunday afternoon has brought renewed focus to the urgent need for improved flood management in Accra and surrounding municipalities, as parts of the capital and Tema West were submerged, leaving commuters stranded and properties affected.
Beginning around 3:00 p.m., the rain lasted nearly three hours and inundated several communities including Adabraka, Kaneshie, Weija, Adentan-Dodowa, and parts of Tema.
The rains also led to severe flooding on key roads such as the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission stretch to Haatso and the Pokuase-Amasaman road. The waterlogged roads caused heavy vehicular traffic and left many passengers stranded for hours. While the rains brought temporary relief from dry conditions, they also served as a reminder of the vulnerabilities in Accra’s urban systems — highlighting the need for long-term solutions to protect homes, livelihoods, and ensure safe movement across the city.
