Ghana defender Jonas Adjetey wins Swiss Super League with FC Basel

By Lukman MUMIN, Accra

Black Stars defender Jonas Adjei Adjetey has won his first league title with Swiss giants FC Basel following victory over Lugano on Saturday.

Adjetey played full throttle as Basel thumped Lugano 5-2 in the championship play-offs but the Swiss giants had to wait 24 hours later to be confirmed champions.

With three matches left, Basel were crowned winners of the 2024/25 season after Servette drew their game against Young Boys on Sunday.

Meanwhile, in a rapid start to the game between Basel and Lugano, the hosts opened the scoring just two minutes into the match through Uran Bislimi.

But Basel responded two minutes later through Albian Ajeti, who was later sent off in the first half.

However, a hat-trick from former Liverpool and Stoke City midfielder Xhedran Shaqiri and a strike from Leo Leroy set Basel on course to winning the game and the Swiss Super League.

There was a late consolation from Anto Grgic but it was not enough for a fightback.

Adjetey, who is on the radar of Real Betis in Spain, will feature in the UEFA Champions League next season if he stays at Basel.
