Sports Minister Kofi Adams engages federation heads

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation on Monday held a one-day stakeholder meeting with heads of sports federations and key state agencies at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.
The session, chaired by the sector Minister, Hon. Kofi Iddi Adams, brought together 47 heads of federations, as well as top officials from the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the National Sports Authority (NSA). The discussions centred on the theme: “Re-engineering Sports for Sustainable National Development.”
Delivering the keynote address, Minister Adams urged federation leaders to align their programmes and policies with sound governance principles such as transparency, accountability, and unity. He stressed the need for strategic reforms to build stronger, more credible sporting institutions.
NSA Director General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, called for an end to prolonged litigations that often tarnish the image of sports bodies. “Before any corporate institution considers sponsorship, they do a background check.
If all they find is negativity or court cases, they walk away,” he said, citing the arm wrestling federation as a positive example of independent growth and structure.
Newly elected Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President, Richard Akpokavie, also proposed that funding allocation be linked to the performance and development plans of federations. He referenced the UK’s model, where sports bodies are resourced based on results and strategic goals.
Monday’s forum marks the first in a series of planned engagements aimed at building a sustainable path for Ghana’s sports sector.
