New Trade Commission Boss Assumes Office, Pledges Support for Local Industries
The newly appointed Executive Secretary of the Ghana International Trade Commission (GITC), Mavis Adjei-Kwaa, has pledged her commitment to promoting fair competition and advancing policies that support local industries.
Speaking after a brief engagement with GITC staff to mark her official assumption of office on Tuesday, April 15, Madam Adjei-Kwaa emphasized that strengthening local businesses will be one of her top priorities.
“We shall do our best, in line with the President’s mandate, to support our local businesses,” she stated. “I will collaborate closely with the Minister for Trade and Agribusiness to advise the President on possible tax reviews, so our businesses can compete more effectively on the global stage.”
She added that empowering local manufacturers to produce at more competitive rates would contribute to creating a level playing field and protecting Ghanaian industries from unfair trade practices.
The Ghana International Trade Commission, since its establishment, has served as a key institution promoting fair trade between domestic and foreign businesses. With a mandate to investigate and regulate issues of trade distortion, the Commission is instrumental in advising government on matters of trade remedies and competitiveness.
The appointment of Mavis Adjei-Kwaa is widely seen as a strategic step toward revitalizing the operations of the Commission and bolstering Ghana’s efforts to protect local enterprise from unfair foreign competition.
Welcoming her to the Commission, Head of Research and Planning at GITC, Bernad Manu Afreh, expressed optimism about her leadership. He pledged the support of the Commission’s staff in helping to implement government initiatives aimed at transforming Ghana’s industrial base.
“As a Commission, we will continue to provide the necessary technical support and policy direction needed to ensure our industries thrive under fair trade conditions,” Mr Afreh stated.
Madam Adjei-Kwaa’s tenure is expected to focus on strengthening the institutional capacity of the GITC, improving policy advisory roles, and reinforcing Ghana’s trade defence mechanisms in line with international best practices.
