IWD 2025: Next-Gen Youth Movement Calls for Greater Action on Gender Equality

As the world marks International Women’s Day (IWD) 2025, the Next-Gen Youth Movement, a fast-growing youth development and empowerment organization, has called on the government and stakeholders to take decisive action in addressing gender inequality in Ghana. The group emphasized that while progress has been made in advancing women’s rights, persistent challenges continue to limit opportunities for young women and girls in education, employment, and leadership.

In a statement to commemorate the day, the movement highlighted the need for increased investment in girls’ education and vocational training, urging the government to provide more scholarships and mentorship programs to ensure equal access to learning opportunities. It also called for stronger policies to promote women’s economic empowerment, particularly in entrepreneurship, by providing financial support, skill development programs, and access to markets for women-led businesses.

The group further expressed concerns over the high rates of gender-based violence and discrimination, urging authorities to strengthen laws and enforcement mechanisms to protect women and girls from abuse. It stressed that addressing these issues requires a multi-sectoral approach involving the government, private sector, civil society, and traditional leaders to create a safe and inclusive environment for women and girls to thrive.

As part of its commitment to promoting gender equality, the Next-Gen Youth Movement emphasized the role of media and community engagement in changing societal perceptions about women. The group called on media organizations to actively challenge stereotypes, highlight success stories of women, and advocate for equal opportunities across all sectors of society. The statement concluded with a call for all Ghanaians to recognize International Women’s Day not just as a day of celebration but as a reminder of the ongoing fight for gender equality. The movement encouraged both men and women to work together in breaking systemic barriers and creating a society where women and girls have equal opportunities to reach their full potential.
