EXECUTIVE Director of the Centre for Outreach, Mentorship & Empowerment, Godswill T. K. Mensah, has called on businesses to reassess their approach to branding, stressing the importance of creating authentic and cost-effective brand identities.
Speaking on Business Breakfast on Zed 101.9 FM, Mensah debunked the myth that branding is inherently expensive, urging companies to prioritize authenticity and alignment with their core values.
“Branding doesn’t have to be costly,” Mensah stated. “Creating an authentic identity for your business should align with your strengths, target audience, and customers—without breaking the bank.”
He explained that the perception of branding as expensive often arises when businesses attempt to emulate identities they cannot afford to maintain. Mensah cautioned entrepreneurs against projecting images that do not reflect their true values or capabilities, noting that such misalignment makes branding unsustainable.
A Case for Authentic Branding
Citing the success story of A1 Bread, a local bakery that grew from a small business into a household name, Mensah illustrated the power of authenticity in branding.
“A1 started with a simple message: ‘If you’re looking for authentic bread that’s hot, real, and tasty, we’re here.’ They didn’t have a massive budget, but their branding was clear, consistent, and true to who they were,” he said.
Mensah highlighted that branding is not the sole preserve of large corporations or multinationals. Instead, every business, regardless of size or audience, must treat branding as an integral part of their strategy, beginning even before launching a product or service.
Branding: The Foundation of Success
“By the time you’re developing a product or service, you should already know your audience, your value proposition, and how to connect with them,” Mensah said. “Branding must be built into the process from the start.”
He further underscored the pivotal role of branding in effective marketing, cautioning against the common mistake of prioritizing marketing efforts without a strong brand foundation.
“Branding is a prerequisite to marketing—you must brand first before you market. If a brand is bad, no amount of marketing can fix it,” Mensah asserted.
Avoiding Superficial Branding
Mensah also warned businesses against focusing solely on appearances, especially on social media, where superficial packaging often overshadows authenticity. He encouraged businesses to focus on being real, as authenticity naturally fosters trust and makes marketing more effective.
“First, be real. If your product, your identity, and your brand are real, you’ve already won. Marketing becomes much easier when your brand is solid, but it becomes difficult if your brand is weak or inauthentic,” he explained.
Branding as a Differentiator
Mensah emphasized that a strong brand allows businesses to carve out a unique niche, helping them foster deeper connections with their audience and stand out in the marketplace. He pointed to mobile phones as an example, noting how specific brands are immediately associated with qualities like reliability and security.
“Branding holds the key to crafting a unique identity that resonates with your audience and sets your business apart from the competition,” he concluded. Mensah’s insights serve as a timely reminder for businesses to prioritize authenticity and strategic branding as essential pillars for sustainable growth and success.
