GHANA has taken a giant leap in its digital transformation journey with the unveiling of state-of-the-art E-Gates at Kotoka International Airport’s Terminal 3.
Designed and developed by Ghanaians, the project represents a ground-breaking advancement in border management, highlighting the nation’s ability to meet global standards with home-grown solutions.
Fully managed by the Ghana Immigration Service in partnership with the Margins Group, the E-Gates promises to revolutionize travel by enhancing efficiency, bolstering security, and elevating Ghana’s global competitiveness.
Vice President’s Vision: A Testament to Ghanaian Ingenuity
Speaking at the launch, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia hailed the project as a testament to Ghana’s innovation and resilience.

“This is a vision that has taken four years to conceptualize, design, build, and implement,” Dr. Bawumia remarked, emphasizing that the E-Gates rival and even surpass border technologies in advanced countries. He credited Ghanaian expertise, particularly the pivotal role played by Margins Group, for achieving a solution that meets and exceeds global standards.
Transforming Border Management: Key Benefits of E-Gates
- Enhanced Efficiency for Travelers
The E-Gates use advanced technologies, including biometrics, artificial intelligence, and real-time data processing, to streamline airport processes. Travelers can pre-register their biometric data and travel credentials, enabling them to bypass traditional queues. This innovation reduces wait times to as little as 15 minutes, ensuring a seamless transition from arrival to exit. - Strengthened National Security
The system cross-references travellers’ data with both national and international security databases, such as Interpol’s global watchlist. This ensures robust identity verification, flags potential threats, and mitigates risks such as unauthorized entry, smuggling, and terrorism.

“We know who everyone is. No one is invisible,” Dr. Bawumia affirmed, highlighting the system’s importance in fortifying Ghana’s borders amid regional instability.
- Boosting Global Competitiveness
By aligning with global advancements in border management, Ghana positions itself as a pioneer in intelligent border control. The E-Gates integrate cutting-edge technologies into a unified platform, placing Ghana ahead of several advanced economies. - Tourism and Diaspora Engagement
The E-Gates offer expedited clearance for Ghanaian citizens and diaspora members, particularly during peak travel periods. For foreign visitors, the seamless entry process enhances Ghana’s reputation as a modern, traveler-friendly destination, fostering increased tourism and economic growth.

Setting a New Standard for Border Management
Ghana joins countries like the UK and EU nations in adopting biometric e-gates and digital travel credential technologies. The Vice President noted that Ghana is not merely keeping pace but setting benchmarks in border control innovation.
“This dual capability positions Ghana as a global leader, aligning with global standards while placing us ahead of many advanced countries,” he said.
Nationwide Deployment Plans
The E-Gates at Kotoka International Airport are just the beginning. Plans are underway to extend the system to major airports in Kumasi and Tamale, as well as all land and sea borders. This expansion ensures uniform benefits across the country, enhancing efficiency and security for all travellers.

A Legacy of Digital Transformation
The E-Gates represent a broader commitment to digital innovation. Dr. Bawumia underscored that this milestone is part of a vision to prepare Ghana for the fourth and fifth industrial revolutions.
“This achievement is a testament to the innovation of our people, the vision of our government, and the strength of our partnerships,” he said, urging Ghanaians to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible. Conclusion
The unveiling of the E-Gates is a significant step in transforming Ghana’s travel experience and border security. With cutting-edge technology, improved traveler convenience, and enhanced national safety, this milestone reaffirms Ghana’s position as a leader in digital innovation and intelligent border management.
