Energy Commission launches initiative to help professionals
THE Energy Commission (EC) has launched the Energy Academy, a groundbreaking initiative designed to equip energy professionals across Africa with advanced expertise in energy policy, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and regulation.
The Deputy Minister of Energy, John Abbam Aboah Sanie, unveiled the Academy during the Energy Forum Series in Accra.
The event, themed “Three Decades of Energy Sector Reforms in Ghana: Reflecting on Performance and Shaping a Sustainable Future,” highlighted the Academy’s potential to transform the continent’s energy sector.
Addressing attendees, Mr. Sanie described the Academy as a legacy of the lessons and innovations cultivated over three decades of energy sector transformation in Ghana. He emphasized its role as a hub for knowledge, innovation, and collaboration to shape a sustainable and resilient energy future.
“Through the Forum’s discussions and the Academy’s training, we are creating a virtuous cycle of learning and innovation that will guide energy sector reforms in Ghana and beyond,” he stated.
The Energy Academy will offer transformative training and certification programs tailored to the evolving demands of the energy sector. Initial collaborations include partnerships with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the Brew Hammond Energy Centre, international organizations, and industry leaders.
Housed in the Nearly Zero Energy Building, the Academy underscores Ghana’s commitment to sustainability. It will also feature an electronic library providing access to digital resources and research publications, fostering lifelong learning and global knowledge exchange.
Oscar Amonoo-Neizer, Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, highlighted the Academy’s focus on critical areas such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, electricity and natural gas regulation, local content, and electrical wiring certifications.
Former Chief Executive Officer of Bui Power, Jabesh Amissah-Arthur, praised the Academy as a pivotal step in addressing technical and regulatory gaps in the sector, enhancing efficiency and effectiveness across the board.
Over the past three decades, Ghana’s energy sector has undergone transformative reforms, enabling private sector participation and enhancing energy access, reliability, and sustainability. The Energy Academy aims to build on these achievements, ensuring Ghana’s leadership in global energy development while empowering professionals across Africa. With its establishment, Ghana reinforces its role as a leader in energy innovation, fostering solutions for sustainable development across the continent.
