– Lauds engineers for making iconic structure a reality

Story: Isaac AIDOO, Accra

GHANA’S capital city, Accra, witnessed a landmark moment as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially commissioned The Bank Square, the state-of-the-art new headquarters of the country’s Central Bank.

The imposing architectural marvel, located in the heart of the city is poised to become a symbol of the nation’s economic strength and a beacon of financial innovation.

Addressing a distinguished audience, President Akufo-Addo lauded the new edifice as a testament to the Bank’s enduring relevance and commitment to modernizing Ghana’s financial institutions.

He emphasized the historical significance of the Bank of Ghana, established in 1957 at the dawn of the country’s independence, as a custodian of Ghana’s monetary stability and economic resilience.

“The Bank Square is a declaration of intent,” President Akufo-Addo stated. “It embodies the resilience of our institutions and the aspirations of our people.” He noted that the facility represents not just a physical structure but a hub for financial collaboration, policy innovation, and sustainable practices.

Designed with cutting-edge technologies and eco-friendly features, the edifice underscores Ghana’s commitment to building responsibly for future generations.

The journey to this momentous achievement, President Akufo-Addo revealed, was driven by the growing demands and complexities of the Bank’s operations over six decades. The old headquarters, while historically significant, had become inadequate.

This new complex, crafted by Ghanaian architectural powerhouse GoldKey Properties under the leadership of Kwaku Bediako, signals a transformative era for the Bank of Ghana.

The Bank Square’s commissioning marks a broader vision of progress. It reflects Ghana’s ambitions to position itself as a regional financial powerhouse. With facilities designed to meet international standards, the new headquarters will bolster the Bank’s ability to implement reforms, enhance regulatory frameworks, and attract investments.

President Akufo-Addo extended his gratitude to Governor Ernest Addison, Deputy Governors Maxwell Opoku-Afari and Elsie Awadzi, and the entire staff of the Bank of Ghana for their professionalism and dedication.

He also acknowledged the architects, engineers, and contractors whose creativity and expertise made this iconic structure a reality.

“This structure, built by Ghanaians for Ghanaians, stands as a landmark of pride,” the President said. He urged all stakeholders to draw inspiration from The Bank Square as they continue to build a stable, inclusive, and prosperous economy.

President Akufo-Addo officially declared The Bank Square open, expressing hope that it would inspire future generations to strive for excellence in service to the nation. As the new headquarters begins its operations, it symbolizes not only the growth of Ghana’s financial sector but also the collective aspiration for a robust and resilient economy.

Governor of the Bank, Dr Ernest Addison revealed that landmark complex is entirely powered by its own harvested solar energy, setting a new standard for environmentally conscious civic and public buildings across Africa.

He said “together, the four buildings will accommodate over 2,500 staff and alongside offices and public banking facilities, there is a currency museum, conference and press amenities, 1,500 seat auditorium and rooftop terraces. “

Despite all the innovative features of the building, by acquiring the services of local partners, Management of the Bank had ensured that the value for money assessment of the project could boast of a lower cost per square meter than comparable projects in Accra

According to the Governor, THE BANK SQUARE had provided an invaluable opportunity for hundreds of local workers to upskill their trades and crafts. It had equipped them with expertise to create buildings that set new standards in sustainability and craftsmanship, positioning them at the forefront of modern construction in Africa. “This state-of-the-art facility will foster creativity, collaboration, and efficiency, and undoubtedly it will enhance productivity in the Bank and further drive our success. We envision this building as a hub for innovation, where more ground-breaking ideas will be born and nurtured. It will be a place where our new generation of officials will thrive and achieve new heights in modern central banking,” Dr Addison stated.
