Trump moves to fulfill campaign pledge with Chris Wright nomination

Donald Trump has named oil and gas executive Chris Wright as his pick to lead the US Energy Department, reinforcing his long-standing campaign promise to boost domestic fossil fuel production.

Wright, the founder and CEO of Liberty Energy, is expected to spearhead efforts to expand oil and gas extraction, reflecting Trump’s commitment to the slogan “drill, baby, drill.”

In a statement, Trump lauded Wright as “one of the pioneers who helped launch the American Shale Revolution that fuelled American Energy Independence and transformed global energy markets and geopolitics.” Trump highlighted Wright’s potential to “usher in a new Golden Age of American Prosperity and Global Peace” by driving innovation and reducing regulatory hurdles in the energy sector.

A proven advocate for fossil fuels

Wright’s extensive experience in hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, underscores his alignment with Trump’s energy agenda. His work with Pinnacle Technologies, a company he founded prior to Liberty Energy, played a pivotal role in the U.S. fracking boom, establishing the country as the world’s largest oil producer.

As Energy Secretary, Wright is expected to champion policies that expand fossil fuel exploration and production, a cornerstone of Trump’s energy platform. This includes plans to open new areas, such as the Arctic wilderness, for oil drilling, aimed at reducing energy costs and reinforcing U.S. energy independence.

Wright will also chair a newly announced Council of National Energy, which Trump described as essential for achieving “U.S. energy dominance.” The council will focus on eliminating regulatory barriers and encouraging private sector investments to accelerate growth in the fossil fuel industry.

Climate Skepticism Shapes Policy

Wright’s stance on climate change has been clear and controversial. In a video posted to LinkedIn, he declared, “There is no climate crisis, and we’re not in the midst of an energy transition either.” His priorities center on ensuring energy is secure, affordable, and beneficial to human lives, regardless of its environmental impact.

Advancing Trump’s Energy Vision

This appointment reinforces Trump’s intent to prioritize fossil fuel development over renewable energy, continuing the trajectory set during his first presidency. Trump’s administration rolled back numerous environmental protections and withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement, signaling a focus on bolstering oil and gas industries. Wright’s nomination represents a significant step toward fulfilling Trump’s campaign pledge to cement the U.S.’s position as a global leader in fossil fuel production. With Wright at the helm, the administration is poised to deepen its commitment to policies that prioritize fossil fuel expansion while challenging global efforts to transition to renewable energy sources.
