Ethiopian Airlines to launch Air Congo in Dec

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest and fastest-growing airline, is set to launch Air Congo next month in collaboration with the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). According to Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mesfin Tasew, this move is part of the airline’s strategy to expand its footprint across Africa. The new national carrier for the DRC is expected to begin operations “within a month,” with Ethiopian Airlines holding a 49 percent stake and the DRC government owning the remaining 51 percent, state-run Ethiopian News Agency reported Friday. Initially operating with two planes, Air Congo plans to increase its fleet to six within the year. The launch of Air Congo is another key achievement for Ethiopian Airlines following its successful joint ventures with Togo’s ASKY, Zambia Airways, and Malawi Airlines, the CEO said. This expansion aligns with Ethiopian Airlines’ ambition to meet the growing demand for air travel across the continent. Tasew emphasized that the launch will significantly boost air travel in the DRC, given the country’s large population and increasing need for transportation. The airline, which recently exceeded its Vision 2025 strategic goals, is now focusing on its Vision 2035 plan, which aims to position it among the top 20 aviation groups globally.
