By Daniel ODURO, Accra

Aspirants hoping to via for the various positions in the upcoming Ghana Football Association (GFA) elections have up to close of day today, Friday, August 11 to fill out and return their application forms.

The closure of nominations later today will pave the way for the GFA’s Elections Committee to vet the aspirants for their respective positions which will then lead to an Elective Congress scheduled for Tamale next month.

The GFA will next month seek a new president, executive council members as well as regional FA Chairmen during its elective congress.

Just like the current president of the association, Kurt Okraku, most of the current Exco members are expected to seek another term in office aside from George Amoako who revealed his intentions to end his stint under the GFA in October.

The position of GFA president is expected to take centre stage with incumbent president Kurt Okraku expected to face stiff competition for former FA Vice-President George Afriyie.

George Afriyie this week rreaffirmed his intention to contest the GFA presidency after picking nomination forms for the upcoming elections.

According to the spokesperson of George Afriyie, Ayereko Frimpong, the experienced football administrator has commenced the process with the aim of unseating the current president by picking up his nomination form and is expected to submit it alongside all required documents.

“George Afriyie who about a month and a half ago stated publicly that he would fight to save Ghana football to a place that was better before and now has been destroyed by Kurt Okraku has picked forms to contest in accordance to the roadmap released by the Election Committee of the Ghana Football Association,” he told Peace FM

“He [George Afrriyie] has begun with filling all the requirements, paperwork, documentation, endorsement, and other necessary particulars, and when we get everything he will return to the Ghana FA to submit all the documents for the elections,” he added.

Meanwhile, Kurt Okraku has received the backing of ten Regional Football Association (RFA) chairmen who picked forms on his behalf as he seeks re-election. The first term of the former MTN FA Cup chairman’s tenure ends in October having assumed office four years ago.
