GFA boss Kurt Okraku wants VAR used in second round of Ghana Premier League

President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku is eager for the introduction of Video Assistant Referee in the second round of the Ghana Premier League campaign.

This comes after a successful meeting between the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) and the Ghana Football Association last week.

The two-day meeting held on Thursday and Friday saw experts from the world football governing body, Inokuchi Takaaki and Michael Bailey, share their expertise on the technology and procedures associated with VAR.


Referees Manager and VAR team leader, Alex Kotey of Ghana, in an interview, reiterated Kurt Okraku’s desire for the implementation of VAR in the second half of the Ghanaian top-flight, scheduled for January 2025.

Okraku is confident VAR will enhance officiating standards in the Ghana Premier League.

Meanwhile, the Ghana FA is currently awaiting FIFA’s official approval to move forward with the implementation of VAR in Ghana’s domestic leagues.

Officiating has been a major problem in the domestic topflight due to the lack of supportive materials including the widely accepted VAR.

The Ghana Premier League is already in its ninth week with eight more matches left in the first round.
