Financial discipline: Absolute necessity for MSMEs

MICRO, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are the backbone of Ghana’s economy, contributing 70% to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and providing over 90% of private sector jobs.
Yet, many of these businesses struggle to grow due to financial mismanagement, limited access to capital, and a lack of financial literacy.
In this context, the recent advice from Prof. Samuel Lartey, Vice-President of Regent University College of Science and Technology, on the importance of financial wisdom and resourcefulness, is both timely and essential.
At a workshop in Accra, Prof. Lartey urged MSMEs to embrace financial discipline, careful planning, and persistence. Drawing from both biblical and classical stories, he highlighted the need for entrepreneurs to adopt a strategic approach to managing their finances. His point was clear: success is not a matter of luck but of making informed decisions and learning from challenges.
For Ghana’s MSMEs, this message carries significant weight. While external factors such as access to finance and government support are crucial, internal practices like sound financial management are equally important for long-term success.
Prof. Lartey’s reference to the biblical story of Peter finding a coin in a fish’s mouth is a reminder that solutions often come from unexpected places when one is resourceful and prepared.
Likewise, the lessons from The Richest Man in Babylon underscore that financial success comes from careful investment, learning from mistakes, and staying disciplined.
Despite government initiatives such as the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) and the Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) aimed at supporting MSMEs, sustainable growth ultimately depends on entrepreneurs’ ability to manage their resources wisely.
Prof. Lartey’s emphasis on financial literacy and discipline offers practical insights that can help business owners navigate the complexities of the market.
As Ghana continues to prioritize MSMEs in its economic strategy, events like these workshops are crucial in equipping entrepreneurs with the skills they need to succeed. By combining financial wisdom with resourcefulness, MSMEs can unlock their full potential, contributing even more to Ghana’s economic transformation. Entrepreneurs must heed this advice if they wish to turn their businesses into resilient engines of growth.
