BoG commissions new educational facilities for Independence Avenue Schools

Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) Dr Ernest Addison has officially inaugurated a state-of-the-art 3-storey 18-unit classroom block and a 3-unit nursery block for the Independence Avenue Cluster of Schools in Accra.

The new infrastructure marks a pivotal development in enhancing educational facilities and reflects the Bank’s dedication to supporting government efforts aimed at improving educational outcomes.

The Governor, in his address, emphasized the importance of quality infrastructure in effective teaching and learning. He noted that the commissioning of these new facilities is not merely a structural upgrade but a significant milestone that aligns with the Bank’s commitment to bolstering community welfare through education.

Reflecting on the school’s storied past, the Governor highlighted its origins as the Accra Government Girls’ School in 1906, during the British colonial era. He shared a personal connection to the school, recounting that his mother and several other girls from Osu attended the institution between 1940 and 1944. The Governor quoted from Mrs. Barbara Oddoye’s autobiography, which describes the school’s legacy of discipline, sophistication, and the notable Domestic Science Department that contributed to Accra’s social events. This historical perspective underscores the long-standing tradition of excellence associated with the Independence Avenue schools.

The Governor elaborated on the circumstances leading to the construction of the new facilities. On September 30, 2019, the Bank of Ghana received a formal request from Mrs. Agatha Dzathor, the headmistress of the Independence Avenue “2” Basic School, and the then Mayor of Accra, Hon. Mohammed Adjei Sowah. The request, aimed at addressing the dilapidated state of the school and enhancing its learning environment, was considered at a time when the Bank was experiencing significant profits. The Board of Directors approved the project as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, demonstrating a commitment to community development and education.

With a student body of 778 pupils, the Independence Avenue Cluster of Schools had been facing challenges due to inadequate infrastructure that posed risks to both staff and students. The new classroom and nursery blocks are expected to address these concerns and provide a conducive learning environment, thereby improving educational outcomes and student safety.

The Governor underscored the broader impact of this initiative, noting that it is not just a response to the immediate needs of the school but also a catalyst for community pride and progress. He called on the school management to implement a robust maintenance culture to ensure the longevity of the facilities and maximize their benefits for future generations.

In his concluding remarks, the Governor inspired the pupils to take full advantage of the new facilities, encouraging them to explore, question, and innovate. He also recognized the teachers’ dedication, emphasizing that their commitment will help transform the school into a center of excellence, thus contributing significantly to the development of the nation’s human capital. The event also served as an opportunity to highlight the Bank of Ghana’s ongoing efforts in supporting educational initiatives and community development. The commissioning of the new facilities is a testament to the Bank’s dedication to fostering positive change and ensuring that the educational sector continues to thrive, ultimately benefiting the nation as a whole.
