UAE Supports Ghana’s Flood Victims
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has responded to Ghana’s appeal for international assistance following the June 29 floods, with the Ghanaian authorities describing the intervention as timely support for communities affected by the disaster.
The floods displaced thousands of families, disrupted livelihoods and exposed the increasing vulnerability of communities to climate-related disasters.
At a presentation ceremony for the relief assistance, the Minister of State in charge of Climate Change and Sustainability, Issifu Seidu, expressed Ghana’s appreciation to the government and people of the UAE for the gesture.
He said the government would ensure that the relief items reached families and communities that suffered the greatest impact from the floods.
He also appealed to other countries, development partners and international organisations to respond to Ghana’s call for support as the country continues efforts to address the needs of affected communities.
The minister described the UAE’s response as a demonstration of the enduring friendship between the two countries.
“The swift and positive response of the United Arab Emirates to Ghana’s appeal is a remarkable demonstration of the enduring friendship between our two countries. Your generosity brings hope,” he said.
Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs James Gyakye Quayson also conveyed Ghana’s appreciation to the UAE for the humanitarian assistance.
He said the gesture was an important expression of solidarity and expressed the hope that it would deepen relations between Ghana and the UAE.
“Please convey to the leadership, government and people of the United Arab Emirates the sincere appreciation of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana for this generous humanitarian assistance. We greatly appreciate that,” Mr Quayson said.
He added that the gesture should strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
“May this gesture of solidarity further deepen the enduring friendship between the Republic of Ghana and the United Arab Emirates, and inspire even greater cooperation between our two nations,” he said.
For the UAE, the assistance represents solidarity with Ghana during a difficult period.
Director of Logistics Support at the UAE Aid Agency, Rashid Al Shamsi, said the UAE considered helping affected communities a shared responsibility grounded in unity and cooperation.
“The United Arab Emirates believes that helping others in time of need is based on unity, authority, cooperation and shared responsibilities. In this regard, we stand with Ghana and support your national efforts to help those affected and to assist recovery,” he said.
The UAE intervention is expected to strengthen ongoing relief efforts as authorities continue supporting flood-affected communities.
